Fescue Aeration and Overseeding to repair your lawn from summer stresses

Fall is the ideal time to think about aeration and overseeding of your fescue lawn in Dallas, Ga.  This is an important step in the lawn care program in the Dallas, Ga area if you are trying to maintain a nice fescue lawn.  Fall is the best time to overseed because the success rate will be much higher than trying it in the spring.  Fescue seeds will germinate best when soil temperatures are in the 50 to 65 degree range, which usually occurs when air temperatures are between 60 and 70 degrees consistently. We recommend having the lawn Core Aerated first, and using a multi- blend of seed that is drought and disease resistant. Sharplawns provides this service each fall from mid september through october. Maximizing the results from our lawn care treatments in Dallas and Acworth, Ga – Proper Mowing

Proper cultural practices such as watering habits and mowing can have a significant impact on the health of your lawn and can make or break the results from our lawn care treatment program. In this article we will go over some tips that will help you maximize your results and improve the health of your lawn by utilizing proper mowing techniques.

Mowing with dull blades will have a tendency to “shred” the grass blades. This can make the lawn more susceptible to disease problems, and will give the lawn a brown appearance. It is recommended to sharpen the blades atleast once or twice per season.  You should always periodically check your mower blades (and grass blades!) for signs of dullness. Shredded ends of the grass is a sure sign that the blades should be sharpened.

Mowing Frequency

During the growing season it is recommended that no more than 1/3 of the grass blade be removed at one time. Removal of more than 1/3 of the grass blades at one mowing will tend to cause you to “mow of the green..” And leave you with a brown lawn every time you mow.  Warm season grasses such as bermuda will look the best if they are cut atleast on a weekly schedule, however every 3 to 5 days would be best.  Going every 10 to 14 days or more between mowing the lawn can result in a weaker stand of turf if the lawn is cut back down short again each time. This will generally “stress” the turf out, and can make for more problems down the road, and the lawn will not stay green very much.  Frequent mowing will also help minimize weed problems in the lawn.

Recommended Mowing Height for Georgia Turf

Grass Type                          Height (inches)

Tall Fescue                                    2-3

Common Bermudagrass              1-2

Hybrid Bermudagrass                0.5-1.5

Zoysia                                         0.5-1.5

Centipedegrass                            1-1.5

Fixing Spring Dead Spots in your Bermuda lawn.

Are you seeing bare spots in your lawn this year?  Its been very common to see bare spots in bermuda this year in Georgia due to the winter weather that we have had this year. Spring dead spots have been common this year in warm season type of grasses like bermuda and zoysia, and we have even seen some winter injury in some places. The good news is that Warm Season Turf such as bermuda and zoysia will spread out and fill back in on their own, and with proper care you can speed up the process.

Spring dead spots are usually perfectly round dead spots in the lawn that have not recovered from the winter. We always recommend raking out the thatch in these areas and top dressing with top soil or sand to help speed recovery. Regular watering and fertilization throughout the summer will speed the recovery and in no time you will see these areas fill back in and thicken up.  Aeration is recommended once per year as well to help promote a thicker greener lawn.

Lawn Care Dallas, Ga – Watering Practices

It looks like the rain this year has not been as frequent as last year so far! Watering on a regular schedule is the best way to maximize the results from our lawn care program in Dallas, Ga. Hard compacted soil is a good sign that your not getting enough water!  If you can’t easily push a screwdriver into the ground then this is a good sign that its time to water.  If your noticing your footprints remain on the lawn after its walked on this is also an early sign of drought stress. Watering at 1 inch per week when there is no rain is a good measure to take to ensure the best results from our lawn care service in Dallas, Ga.  We always recommend thorough watering once per week, rather than short frequent waterings.  Why?  Because, longer thorough watering will  promote a deeper root system which will build a stronger, thicker and healthier stand of turf, while shorter waterings will tend to promote a shallow root system which can set the turf up for problems later on down the road! We always recommend watering 1 inch per week minimum for best results.

Prevent Weeds Now in Dallas and Acworth Georgia!

Now that the  holidays are over, and the new year is here.. How about a better looking lawn for 2013?  Even though we’ve still got a ways to go until the grass starts growing again, now is the time to think about preventing crabgrass and other difficult to control weeds from invading your lawn this spring and summer.

Crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures are consistently above 55 degrees. We typically will start to see these temperatures in Metro Atlanta around the end of February, however even before this time we can see some warmer weather, and with this some earlier germination is possible.

We generally start our Round #1 Crabgrass Prevention treatment in early February.  The products we use will stay active in the soil for an extended period of time, so even if we are a little early, when the conditions are right for germination your lawn will be covered.  We follow up with a second application 6 to 8 weeks later when the first application is about broken down. This second treatment will extend your pre-emergent control, as well as have some post-emergent control to any young crabgrass that may be trying to germinate.

Best Mowing Practices

Mowing height and frequency can play a big part in the appearance of your lawn. Proper mowing requires mowing at the recommended height for your grass type, as well as frequent enough as to where you are not removing more than 1/3 of the grass blade at one time.

It is also a good idea to raise the mowing height a bit during times that could be stressful for your lawn such as drought conditions, areas that are heavily shaded or as the lawn begins going into winter dormancy (warm season turf).

It is also important to mow with only a sharp mower blade. A dull mower blade will shred the grass blades, which can leave behind patches of yellow lawn. The damaged grass will then be more susceptible to disease problems.

Recommended Mowing Height for Georgia Turf:

Grass Type                          Height (inches)

Tall Fescue                                    2-3

Common Bermudagrass              1-2

Hybrid Bermudagrass                0.5-1.5

Zoysia                                         0.5-1.5

Centipedegrass                            1-1.5
